Submarine Robot!

Yep, building a submarine robot, SER SOL II. Actually it's about my fourth attempt at building one, developmental prototyping. SER SOL was the name of the previous sub, an acronym for Submersible Exploratory Robot, Son Of Leviathan (Leviathan being the name of the boat I built specifically to launch it from). Kind of a cheesy name, but it was suggested by one of the counselors from the summer camp I work at and the name stuck.

These are the stereo cameras, a pair of Hitachi palmcorders, stripped to be made more compact. They are shown here mounted in half of the gimbal enabling right to left panning. The other half of the gimbal of course will enable it to pan up and down 180 degrees. Stereo vision enables you to have depth perception remotely and it worked even better than I had hoped it would. In order to see in stereo however, you need a stereo viewer like this one:

The picture below is a stereo image. The best thing to do I suppose would be to print it out and stick a card on the line in the middle, separating your eyes as you look at them. It'll be tough to make it work, but if it does the result is quite spectacular.
